A Plethora of New Opportunities: The New Direct Connection between UP Los Baños, IRRI, and UP Diliman
With the coordination of DOST-ASTI, the IRRI IT Services, the UPLB IT Center, and the UP Computer Center in Diliman, a direct network connection now flows through UPLB, IRRI, and UP Diliman. This connection is essentially a free method of communicating between the three organizations because it bypasses the use of commercial Internet Service Providers (ISPs). Not only would this communication be free, but it would be significantly faster for traffic to travel between the three organizations than it would previously. This direct link will not be used for commercial and commodity internet, but rather for inter-organization communication.

UPLB denies ban on Lozada
Contrary to statements made by the UPLB student council and the Youth for Truth and Accountability Now, Chancellor Luis Rey I. Velasco has not blocked a visit by NBN whistleblower Rodolfo Noel “Jun” Lozada to the University. News of the alleged ban appeared in Journal Online on March 17.
According to the Chancellor, Mr. Lozada is very much welcome to the campus and free to speak before the constituents. He said that the perceived ban may have sprung from a proposal he made for the student council and UPLB to organize the forum* in which Mr. Lozada and other guests representing various “sides” of the NBN-ZTE issue are the main speakers. Chancellor Velasco proposed this to the student council in order to allow everyone to be informed, and to analyze and discern the truth for themselves. “Knowing Mr. Lozada on a personal level, I am sure that he would have welcomed the opportunity to a healthy discussion on the issue,” he added.
UPLBCA to celebrate 99th Foundation Day
On March 6-9, 2008, a grand celebration awaits the constituents and the general public as the UPLB College of Agriculture (CA) observes its 99th Foundation Day.
Starting at 5:30 am, a band will be going around the campus to signal the start of the commemorative activities. UPLB officials, unit heads, invited guests and alumni will then troop to ‘Pook Pinagtatagan’ or more popularly known as the Foundation Site for a simple ceremony. After which, they will conduct a motorcade going to the Agricultural Systems Cluster (ASC)/Crop Science Cluster (CSC) open field for the official opening of the Agri-Trade Fair and Techno-Demo Exhibit.
